The Sun Rises in the East is one of the mega classic East Coast hip hop albums, along with albums such as Wu-Tang Clan's Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) (1993), Nas's Illmatic (1994) and Black Moon's Enta Da Stage (1993).
For this album, Hastings draws inspiration from the movie Escape from New York The metaphorical idea that Jeru the Damaja would destroy everyone and would be the only survivor in the aftermath of a Hip Hop battle.
