Fredro Starr’s explosive new memoir pulls no punches. BACDAFUCUP: THE STORY OF ONYX chronicles the gritty rise of the legendary rap group Onyx from the streets of New York to the top of the hip hop world. The story begins in the early ‘90s with original members Fredro Starr, Big DS, Suave, and B Wiz. But tragedy strikes early—B Wiz is murdered in a drug deal gone wrong.
From that moment, the journey of Onyx takes off. They meet Jam Master Jay, who not only mentors the group but also signs them to Jam Master Jay/Def Jam Records, and soon Sticky Fingaz joins, forming the classic lineup.
With their aggressive style and slam dancing energy, Onyx breaks through with the chart-topping hit “Slam”, helping define hardcore hip hop. Their debut album BACDAFUCUP sells millions, earns a Soul Train Award for Best Rap Album in 1994, and puts them on national tours with artists like Snoop Dogg, along with major merchandising deals.
But with success comes chaos—Fredro’s long-term relationship ends, Sticky begins dating a Def Jam exec, Big DS leaves the group, and Suave’s brother is sentenced to 75 years in prison. Internal struggles and rivalries with other rap crews follow, yet Onyx keeps pushing.
